How to play MPEG-4 videos on desktop computer?
Aug 22 2009, 3:21 AM EDT | Post edited: Aug 22 2009, 3:21 AM EDT
MPEG-4 videos taken with my Diamond's camera play back fine on the device but, when downloaded on my desktop, cannot play. Quicktime player 7.6 gives me an error 2041: invalid sample description.

I have this problem with my new Diamond. I had the same problem with my HTC Magician and HTC Touch. Clearly, there must be a bug somewhere. My Magician offered the option of saving the videos in AVI and this worked beautifully. But this option is not present with the Touch and the Diamond.

The Diamond offers to save in H.263 (3gpp file) and it seems to play fine with Quicktime But what's wrong with MPEG-4?

download VLC media player

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Its a program everyone should have, it plays almost every type of video file including xvid/dvix

2. No, VLC media player will not do it.

Talonts, I just installed the VLC media player as you suggested. For an MPEG-4 movie, it played the image but not the sound. I got the following error message: "No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "samr". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this." Same error with MPEG-4 movies shot with the HTC Touch.

Worse, I got the same error with H.263 (3gpp) movies that play fine on the Quicktime player. I'm de-installing VLC. Thanks anyway.

Thanks Dr Jello, Klite and SourceForge!

I installed the Klite Mega Codec pack, which also installed Media Player Classic (SourceForge). Now, this player plays the MPEG-4 files from both the Diamond and Touch. Great!

Even better, the new codecs allow the AVS converter 6 (avs4you.com) to read & convert the MPEG-4 to AVI, DVD, etc.

HTC, please list this solution in the FAQs above.
